If there’s one name you should remember the rest of this season, it’s Jake Neufeld.
The senior quarterback led the La Costa Canyon Mavericks (4-0) to their fourth straight victory of the season, cruising through Friday night with a 35-7 win over Poway High School (1-3).
Jake Neufeld threw for two touchdowns on the night, and scored one himself off a quarterback keeper.
Coming in to Friday’s game, the Mavericks debuted in the County’s Top 10 rankings at No. 7, finally getting recognized for their powerhouse of a program.
LCC is a program known for their play on the offensive side of the ball, but this 2017 season they’ve also exposed their dominant defense to the county as well.
So far this season, the Mavericks have been averaging nearly four sacks per game and has allowed zero passing touchdowns.
The only touchdown La Costa Canyon let slip past their defense tonight was an 11-yard touchdown run from Justin Kramer. This was one of the only plays throughout the night where the Titans were able to get in Maverick Territory.
On the offensive side of the ball, four Mavericks saw action in the end zone tonight.
Zachary Monahan scored the first points of the game off a 25-yard pass from Jake Neufeld in the first quarter.
Karson Lippert scored two touchdowns on the night, leading his team with 7 touchdowns so far this season.
Jake Neufeld was able to sneak one in to the end zone later on in the second quarter to put his team up 21-7 heading in to halftime. The quarterback also found Trevor Gonzalez in the third quarter for a 14-yard touchdown.
Looking ahead, La Costa Canyon will travel back home next Friday for Week Five coverage of the Prep Pigskin Report. The Mavericks will be playing their first league game against Carlsbad (3-1), a team who just suffered their first loss of the season.
Poway High School will be playing their first league game of the season as well at Del Norte High School (1-3).

PREVIEW: Always compete. Strength and honor. Character and Courage.
These are the three mottos Poway Head Coach Scott Coats is taking his team in to Week Four with as they prepare to battle a strong, undefeated team – the La Costa Canyon Mavericks (3-0).
The Mavericks will be making the drive across North County this Friday with redemption on their mind due to last year’s lopsided loss to the Titans, 41-26. In game history, both programs have faced each other a total of nine times, with LCC on top garnering five of the nine wins.
The Mavericks recently debuted in the county’s Top 10 rankings for the first time this season, coming in at No. 7. This is nothing new for La Costa Canyon, however. Ever since Sean Sovacool took the program under his wing in 2010, the Mavericks have been ranked in the Top 10 at least some point during the season in each of his years as head coach.
If you did the math correctly, yes that is eight consecutive seasons.
Head Coach Sean Sovacool is excited his team finally cracked the Top 10 rankings for the 2017 season, but know they can’t stop here.
“We are a Top 10 caliber program,” said coach Sovacool. “It is nice to get some recognition for it this year again, but to be honest I am only really concerned about those rankings at the end of the year.”
Poway High School had a dominant team in 2016, going 10-2 and making it to the semi-finals in the CIF Division 2 playoffs. Second year head coach Scott Coats had a lot of players graduate from this 2016 roster, leaving him with many young players to develop.
The Titans (1-2) are hungry heading in to Week Four, looking for a win after coming off a tough loss to Olympian High School last Friday. The Titans gave up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, losing the game by one-point.
Despite the loss, this 2017 roster is stacked with a stable of running backs. The group is lead by Garret Van Nostrand and Donovan Bercaio, but with touchdowns on the season.
La Costa Canyon will be playing with a full roster this Friday. Poway will be without one the Titan’s senior leaders, Matt Blackburn. The wide receiver is suffering with a broken ankle.
Highlights of this game and 31 others from around San Diego County can be seen on the Emmy-Award winning high school football show "Prep Pigskin Report." Kick off is at 10:30 every Friday night during the fall on KUSI-TV Channel 9/51. Live streaming of the show will also be available on KUSI.com.
