The Helix Highlanders got their revenge for last years loss in the San Diego Section CIF Open Division Championship, by beating the Cathedral Catholic Dons 39-0. The Highlanders dominated the game on both sides of the ball and broke it open in the 2nd half.

Helix QB Carson Baker accounted for 5 TD’s in the game. He got the scoring started by running 6-yards in the first quarter to put the Highlanders up 6-0. Baker went on to play pitch and catch with a variety of receivers, including Rashad Scott who hauled in 2 TD catches from 15 and 23 yards respectively.

The Highlanders Isaac Taylor-Stuart got in on the scoring fun when he broke free and put his dazzling speed on display as he ran 45 yards in the fourth quarter to put a stamp on the win.

Helix will next take on the Dons bitter rivals as they travel next week to play the St. Augustine Saints. While Cathedral Catholic will look to bounce back as they go on the road against Olympian.

PREVIEW

At the start of the 2017 CIF San Diego Section Football Season, you could make an argument that the two best teams in the County were the Cathedral Catholic Dons and Helix Highlanders.   Both teams faced off in the 2016 CIF San Diego Section Open Division Football Championship, with Cathedral winning 35-27.

Coming up on week three of the 2017 football season the two teams will face off again as Helix will try and  get revenge for last years loss as they will host Cathedral this Friday night. The Highlanders are coming off of a bye after losing to Paraclete (Lancaster, CA) 23-6 during the 2017 Honor Bowl. The Dons come into the game fresh off a 48-6 win over Westview after losing there first 2 games of the season.

Both Teams are stacked with athletes on both sides of the ball. The Highlanders feature DB/WR Isaac Taylor-Stuart, who is one the fastest kids in the State. They also have WR/DB Rashad Scott, who is a ball hawk on defense and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time to come up with a key interception.

Cathedral Catholic’s offense will be led by RB Shawn Poma. Poma is a powerful runner who also has deceptive speed and agility that allows him to avoid being tackled easily. The defense is anchored by LB Jordan Allen who uses his speed to stop the run game and create havoc for opposing quarterbacks.

On paper this is shaping up to be one of the best games you’ll see this season. If you can’t make it to the game to watch in person, be sure to tune into the Prep Pigskin Report on KUSI Friday night for highlights of this game and many more from around the county.
