Some Alameda residents warned not to drink or use tap water

Posted: Updated:

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - Officials in a San Francisco Bay Area city have issued a 48-hour alert warning residents not to drink or use the tap water.

The East Bay Times reports ( Wednesday residents of Alameda Point are advised not to drink water from faucets, and not to use tap water to brush teeth, wash dishes, cook or hydrate pets.

Authorities said late Tuesday a possible cross-contamination between a potable water drinking line and a non-potable water line used for irrigation spurred city staff to issue the alert.

Crews are assessing water systems in the Alameda neighborhood, which was affected due to its former Navy base infrastructure.

Water officials say no other neighborhoods were affected and that free bottled water is available at Alameda Point Collaborative.
