Mistrial for 1 in San Bernardino County corruption trial

Posted: Updated:

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A jury deadlock led to a mistrial Wednesday for the last of four defendants in San Bernardino County's "Colonies" corruption case.

The jury had continued to deliberate charges against former county Assistant Assessor Jim Erwin after a separate jury last month acquitted three other defendants in a trial over an alleged scheme to get county approval of a $102 million court settlement.

In 2003, Colonies Partners sued the county over flood control easements on a housing and commercial project in Upland. That led to the 2006 settlement, and then allegations of bribery and conflict of interest.

The earlier jury acquitted former county Supervisor Paul Biane, former county official Mark Kirk and developer Jeff Burum.

District Attorney Mike Ramos says his office is evaluating what to do next.
