Broken water main causes flooding in Morena district

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Three water main breaks a few blocks apart from each other flooded traffic lanes and forced road closures in the busy Morena district Thursday and likely were related to a fourth that shut down a stretch of Interstate 8 in Mission Valley a short time later, authorities said.

The first of the two commercial-area pipeline ruptures happened in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard about 9:15 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Public Utilities Department.

The mishap left two blocks of the street temporarily without water service, city spokesman Arian Collins said.

Over the next several hours, two more breaks in sections of 16-inch-diameter water mains occurred along Morena Boulevard.

Then, shortly after noon, a 30-inch water transmission line failed underneath I-8 near Hotel Circle South, causing an estimated 20-foot-high geyser, leading to a large sinkhole in the pavement and forcing a full closure of the eastbound side of the route through the afternoon.

City officials did not believe the quick-succession main breaks were mere coincidence, according to Collins.

"How exactly they're related, we're not sure yet,'' the spokesman said. "They are more than likely related.''

Also unclear as of early this evening was how long it would take crews to repair the broken pipelines and reopen the affected roadways.
