Marty Sesma took five trips to the end zone, as the visiting Sweetwater Red Devils (1-3) went home with a 46-7 win over the El Cajon Valley Braves (1-4) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
Richard Malixi started the scoring for Sweetwater, with a 16-yard touchdown run to cap the first drive of the game. Sesma would score again, this time from a yard out, but El Cajon Valley's Darrel Davis took the ensuing kickoff back for an 86-yard return to get the Braves on the board.
After a pair of Sweetwater field goals, it was all Sesma on the scoreboard. A 14-yard run made gave the Red Devils a 32-7 lead at the break. Sweetwater's Robert Hewett picked off a pass in the third and brought it back to the 2-yard line, and Sesma would punch it in from there. Sesma then scored on a 7-yard scamper, giving him 5 touchdown runs in his season debut after missing the first three games with a a thumb injury.
With their first mark in the win column and a healthy Sesma back to tote the rock, the Red Devils return home to face Serra in Week 6. El Cajon Valley has a bye before welcoming Chula Vista in Week 7.
PREVIEW: The El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week comes to you this week from the campus of El Cajon Valley, as the Braves welcome in the Sweetwater Red Devils.
It's Homecoming week for El Cajon Valley, and the home crowd will be looking for a big night from their backfield duo of Maquel Garner and Darrel Davis. Both ball-carriers showed their breakaway ability in the Week 3 win over Clairemont, as they each posted a touchdown run over 60 yards. Garner was slowed by an injury in Week 4 against Crawford, and his health will be a key factor for the Braves.
Sweetwater has a big-time performer in the backfield as well. In 2016, Marty Sesma racked up 295 carries, churning out 1756 yards and 8 trips to the endzone. First-year head coach Bryan Wagner spent his high school years at Hilltop and eventually spent nine years as a punter in the NFL.
