Tonight was a game that was not to be missed in Week 5!
It was a team effort as the Rancho Bernardo Broncos stomped their way to victory, winning their first game of the season against the Mount Carmel Sun Devils.
Celebrating homecoming the Broncos, we’re pumped in the first quarter and wanted to take the lead as soon as possible. Senior kicker, Matt Araiza, out from the 44 yard line made it look an easy field goal to put Rancho Bernardo on top 3-0.
Later in the second quarter, quarterback, Christian Lewis found his in the endzone for an 8-yard touchdown with the extra point secured by Araiza. Dallin Dunn, rushed from the 27 yard line to be stopped at the 1. Next play, Lewis hands off the ball to Dunn for the 1 yard touchdown.
Still in the second, Mount Carmel’s Ty Virgin, Grant Walby and Rueben Flowers rushed for a combined 29 yards to set up their kicker at the 40. Ethan Albertson then puts the Sun Devils on the board with a 15 yard field goal.
In the third quarter and only scoring play, Rancho Bernardo Araiza fires back with a 4 yard field goal.
The Sun Devils would add to their first touchdown in the fourth from Walby, as well as a 44 yard field goal from Albertson.
Tahj Martin would secure the lead for the Broncos for an 80 yard touchdown.
Next week Mount Carmel takes on Poway at Poway High School while Rancho Bernardo will be visiting Mission Hills High School.
PREVIEW: When it comes to week five of the CIF San Diego High School Football, some teams have better records than others, but for the Rancho Bernardo Broncos (0-4), they have something to look forward to - The Rotary Cup. The Rotary Cup is in its 25th year and what better way would it be for the Broncos to win at home as they host the 1-3 Sundevils of Mt. Carmel.
Since 1992, both teams have played one another for the Rotary Cup, with Rancho Bernardo beating Mt. Carmel 43-20 in the 2016 season. The Broncos will host the Sundevils at this years breakfast, where the coaches bring four players each to represent the team(s). This will also be the first year that both teams will wear their home jersey’s when they play each other... It may seem like a rivalry but more of a brotherhood to players who love football but play for different teams.
Seven year head coach, John Anderson, of the Mt. Carmel Sundevils said, “Both teams players grew up in pop warner, so they know each other pretty well; it will be a hard fought game.”
Not only are the teams playing for the Rotary Cup, but it is also Rancho Bernardo’s 2017 Homecoming game. It will be a special game if the Broncos can get their first win of the season, win at homecoming and take the trophy for the year.
Will the Broncos break their losing streak on Friday against the Sun Devils? We will have to wait and see.
Rancho Bernardo will also be partnering with the town of Port Arthur, Texas to raise funds to provide gift cards to those in need who were hit during Hurricane Harvey.
