Otay Ranch Mustangs vs Valhalla Norseman - KUSI News - San Diego, CA

Otay Ranch Mustangs 21, Valhalla Norseman 7

Posted: Updated:

Fans of defensive plays were sure to enjoy the game between the Otay Ranch Mustangs (3-3)

and the Valhalla Norseman (2-3), as this low scoring affair saw the Mustangs pull off a gritty 21-7 win against the Norseman.

Both offenses grinded on the field yet struggled to gain any traction, as penalties and dropped passes killed any momentum the teams had. However, the Mustangs were able to break through with a long drive culminating in a 3 yard touchdown run by Gus Espiritu. Valhalla would return fire on the next play with a 60 yard kickoff return by Kaire Worthy. Unfortunately, Valhalla wouldn’t be able to put points on the board as the Mustang defense stood tall and held their ground.

Unfortunately for Valhalla, quarterback Dennis Dahlin would fall injured after absorbing a big hit from the Mustang defenders, and was replaced with Bryan Madriz. Madriz, however, would have to deal with penalty troubles by his team and had trouble getting points. The Mustangs had similar issues, constantly shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and negative yardage which stalled offensive drives. However, Otay Ranch’s defensive linemen were able to constantly make noise in Valhalla’s backfield and drag down runners and quarterbacks alike.

The third quarter finally saw offensive sparks, as Otay Ranch quarterback Jonte “Puka” Stewart connected with tight end Darian Williams who turned for the end zone for a 33 yard gain, leading to the Mustangs punching the ball in to take a 14-0 lead. Valhalla mimicked Otay Ranch’s drive as Madriz fired a pass to Matthew Bazzi, who clawed his way to the 1 yard line. Valhalla skipped into the endzone to finally get on the scoreboard, but that was all they would put up. Stewart and Williams connected one last time in the fourth quarter for a 33 yard touchdown pass, and the defense held Valhalla in check to lead the Mustangs to their third win.

Otay Ranch will welcome an Eastlake team on a roll into their stadium next Friday and Valhalla will look to tighten up their offense as they travel to Santee to take on a West Hills team sitting on a 4 game winning streak.

Preview: High School Football continues this week as the Otay Ranch Mustangs (2-3) are set to take on the Valhalla Norseman (2-2)

Otay Ranch has played in many close games with many quality opponents, and last week was no different, dropping a 14-13 decision to the Steele Canyon Cougars. The team will look to stay disciplined this week as penalties and turnovers were a big factor in last week’s loss, including a fumble in the final minute of the game. Gus Espiritu will try to build momentum after running for 120 yards on 20 carries last week. Quarterback Alfredo Garcia continues to worry defenses with his passing and running game, while wideouts Josh Lira and Zeek Cruz will cause problems for the Norseman secondary. If the Mustangs can avoid turnovers and establish an offensive rhythm early, they have the potential to win this game.

The Norseman are looking for a rebound after getting dominated 38-7 by the Eastlake Titans. Three turnovers and marginal offense doomed Valhalla, and their only points came off of a 29 yard touchdown catch by Connor Buckley. The run defense must be tighter if they want to have a chance at victory, as Espiritu and Garcia have already proven to be dangerous runners. However, this team has the talent to to rack up points in  quick fashion and if the Mustangs aren’t careful, they will find themselves to quickly be down late in the game and forced to play catch up.
