On a balmy night in Mar Vista, the Mariners emerged victorious against the Santana Sultans 34-28. This game had a bit of everything. There were touchdowns, blocked PAT's, recovered onside kicks, big plays, and big hits. The Sultans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on their opening drive with the help of quarterback Josh Oedewaldt's arm. He completed passes to Cameron Kane and Davon Chestnut setting up Brooks Moutaw for a 2 yard TD run. Mar Vista would not be phased, and it was the defense that would get the team going when Nikolas Figueroa stripped the ball from Sultans running back Brooks Moutaw giving the Mariners excellent field position. One play later, Marcus Ramirez would scamper into the endzone to tie the score at 7. The Mariners would take the lead early in the second quarter after Sebastian Burke scored his first of three touchdowns on a 9 yard run. On the ensuing kickoff, the Mariners executed a pooch kick and were able to recover the ball on the Sultan 30 yard line. Three plays later, Jacob Beck would connect with Marcelino Maclang for a 17 yard score, and just like that the Mariners would be up 19-7. Santana would answer later in the quarter with a 12 play drive that was capped off by the first of Dylan Hanslik's touchdown runs making the score 19-14 at the half.
The start of the second half began with another sustained drive by the Sultans. However, the Mariner defense did not break and ended up stopping Santana on a 4th and 5 to get the ball back on their 25 yard line. Two plays later, Jacob Beck would hit Sebastian Burke in stride and Burke did the rest as he took it to the house for a 75 yard score. Santana would not go away. After forcing a fumble of their own deep in Mar Vista territory, Dylan Hanslik would score his second touchdown of the game making the score 26-21 early in the fourth quarter. The Sultans would get the ball back after the defense forced a punt. Josh Oedewaldt tried to lead his team to a comeback, but he fumbled the ball near midfield and the Mariners would recover. Two plays later, it was Sebastian Burke who would put the nail in the coffin of the Sultans when he scored his third touchdown with a 46 yard scamper. The Sultans would add a score late but it would not be enough on this night.
PREVIEW: It is Week 6 and this week I travel to Mar Vista where the Mariners (3-2) will be the host to the visiting Santana Sultans (3-2). Last week Mar Vista won their second game in a row when the beat University City Centurions 28-21. The rushing attack of the Mariners is the meat and potatoes of this offense. Six running backs got at least 4 carries for 26 yards. Collectively, the Mariners running backs racked up 264 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Jacob Beck was the beneficiary of all that heavy lifting because he ended up with 3 carries for 5 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Santana also is riding a 2 game winning streak going into Friday's matchup. They survived an offensive shootout against the Vincent Memorial Scots 50-43. The Sultans feature a more traditional offense with Senior quarterback Josh Oedewaldt and Sophomore running back Brooks Moutaw. Last week, Oedewaldt completed 10 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown and Moutaw had 23 carries for 170 yards and 4 touchdown. The Sultans also have Wide Receiver Davon Chestnut. Not only did he help his team on offense with his 4 catches and a touchdown, but he helped his team on defense with 6 tackles and an interception last week. He could be the difference maker in this upcoming clash.
