The Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week featured the La Jolla Vikings hosting the Hoover Cardinals. The Cardinals could not contain the Vikings offense causing them to fall to 1-5 after a Viking 52-10 win. The Vikings bump their record to 2-4.
Early in the week, Vikings Head Coach Tyler Roach mentioned he wanted the offense to get off to a fast start and the offense did just that after the Cardinals struck first with a 31-yard field goal.
Vikings started their response drive with Trevor Scully’s 46-yard pass to Gabe Solis. Solis would set up the first of many La Jolla touchdowns of the night. With 10:02 left in the first half, Scully would throw his second touchdown of the night to Michael Wells putting the Vikings ahead 24-3. Hoover would get on the board with a touchdown run by Devonte Ward making it 31-10 still in the second quarter.
As halftime approached, La Jolla would extend their lead 45-10. Scully had two more touchdown passes, a total of five on the night, to Solis and Jonathon O’Neal. Coach Roach may have wanted his defense to force the Cardinals into throwing situations but either way, the defense got the job done.
The Vikings continue on their home field next week as they host the Patrick Henry Patriots (2-4). Also playing on their home field are the Hoover Cardinals as they host the Coronado Islanders (2-4). Another week of high school football is in the books, and another week is yet to be written. PREVIEW: Week 7 of the Prep Pigskin Report brings this Red Jacket to La Jolla as the Vikings host the Hoover Cardinals for a City League matchup where both teams have a record of 1-4. In addition to the Vikings hosting this conference game, they will also be having Faculty Appreciation Night.
In Week 6, the Cardinals defense had a great first half after sacking Fallbrook’s quarterback consecutively and making crucial stops on fourth down. However, their offense could not get rolling. Quarterback Manny Correa and running back Jacoy McNealy would rush for solid gains but had a hard time finishing each drive.
In fact, Vikings Head Coach Tyler Roach acknowledged the Cardinals offense as “evolving and getting faster and more crisp” each week, thus expecting the Hoover offensive line to create holes for McNealy as the Cardinals battle for their first conference win.
The Vikings are coming off a bye week where Coach Roach expressed their main focus was to get healthy and prepare themselves for the remainder of the season. Vikings quarterback Trevor Scully has thrown a total of ten touchdowns so far. One of his targets is Gabe Solis who was a candidate for Play of the Week in Week 5. Not only does Solis have a total of five touchdowns on the season, but he has also recorded 11 tackles.
