Chula Vista Spartans 40, El Cajon Valley Braves 20

Posted: Updated:

The Chula Vista Spartans (4-3) were able to get off to a fast start, and were able to hold off a last second surge from the El Cajon Valley Braves (1-5) to win the game 40-20.

Chula Vista started the game off right, driving the ball down the field and sending Justin Cantwell barreling into the endzone for their first score. Other than this, the first quarter remained relatively quiet as the two teams battled defensively.

The second quarter saw an explosion of offense, as Cantwell started off by scoring a touchdown on a 10 yard catch and run. The Spartans also made a video-game like catch, with Darrion Hamilton’s pass getting tipped by both an El Cajon Valley defender and a Chula Vista receiver before being hauled in by Kajahan Duncan for an 11 yard touchdown. However, the Braves would get there own points as DeAndre Kelmon fired a pass to Darrel Davis, who would slip into the endzone for El Cajon Valley’s first points of the day.

Unfortunately, El Cajon Valley’s Issac Blake made a big tackle, yet immediately reached for his throat. He would eventually go down and an ambulance was required to take him away. He was taken out of the game, yet he was able to give the thumbs up to the crowd as he was loaded up onto the stretcher while the game clock ticked off into halftime.

The show must go on, however, and the Spartans continued to play hard. After a 45 yard pass to Giovanni Torres, Darrion Hamilton would take a snap and roll to his right, rifling a pass to Cantwell who would bulldoze a few defenders on his way to the endzone for a 15 yard score. El Cajon Valley would score on two more occasions, including a kickoff return, but Chula Vista’s lead proved just too insurmountable and the Braves absorbed their fifth loss  of the season.

El Cajon Valley will stay at home next week and welcome the Mount Miguel Matadors, while Chula Vista will return to their home field and take on the Hilltop Lancers.

PREVIEW: Another week of high school football is upon us, and with it comes another East County game, this time fans will see the Chula Vista Spartans (3-3) take on the El Cajon Valley Braves (1-4).

The Spartans saw their three game win streak snapped by the Eastlake Titans, who took the win 35-0. After wins against Castle Park and Bonita Vista, each winless teams, Chula Vista crumbled to the now 5-1 Titans and are looking to rebound. Quarterback Darrion Hamilton, however, is still a dual threat weapon and has scored four passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns and has combined for nearly 400 yards of total offense.Senior running back Victor Agraz sets the pace in the backfield and already has over 400 yards of rushing to his name. The defensive line is anchored by senior captain Ubaldo Nolasco and his 10.5 sacks and 31 tackles. If the Spartans can get the offense rolling early, they can surely take control of the game and the scoreboard.

The Braves have had a disappointing season so far, but there is still time to turn things around. However, they’ll need to find a way to score more than seven points in a game, which is all they’ve mustered for the past two games, enduring a 35-0 shutout by Crawford and a 46-7 pounding at the hands of Sweetwater High. Deandre Kelmon has the talent to win ballgames and junior tailback Darrel Davis is only a few weeks removed from a 208 yard, 3 touchdown game. If El Cajon Valley can get a few quick scores, they might just stun the Spartans.
