Jordin Young scored on a trick-play touchdown pass from Cade Weaver with 33 seconds left in the game, to give West Hills (5-1) a 24-21 win over the Valhalla (2-4) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
The Norsemen took a 21-17 lead with just six minutes left, on a 3-yard run from Kegan Baker. The Wolf Pack methodically moved the ball back the other way, but faced a 4th-and-12 near midfield at the two-minute mark. Young floated a ball over the middle to Austin Dill, good for a 21-yard gain deep into Valhalla territory. When they reached the Norseman 11, Young pitched it to Weaver on the right side of the field, and he threw it back to a wide-open Young on the left. The quarterback then weaved his way into the endzone for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Young got the scoring going with a 12-yard pass to Hunter Gauthier for the only points of the first quarter. Valhalla answered twice in the second quarter, on an 11-yard pass from Bryan Madriz to Cole Howard and a 1-yard run from Baker.
The Wolf Pack's Noah Quigley tied the game at 14 with a 4-yard run in the third. And Weaver hit a 30-yard field goal to start the final frame, giving West Hills the lead back at 17-14 and setting the stage for the drama down the stretch.
Valhalla returns home to host Grossmont next week, while West Hills welcomes Steele Canyon to the blue turf.
PREVIEW: The El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week gets its first taste of league play, as the Valhalla Norsemen (2-3) visit the West Hills Wolf Pack (4-1) to kick off the Grossmont - Hills slate.
Last year, Casey Ash's squad stood in the exact same position: After dropping the season opener to Southwest (El Centro), they rattled off four straight wins before opening league play against Valhalla. But after a 34-0 loss to the Norsemen, they added just one more win to their total the rest of the way.
For the Wolf Pack to have a better stretch run this time around, junior quarterback Jordin Young will be a key factor. While he's only thrown about 12 passes a game, he has 9 touchdowns compared to just 2 interceptions. And he also leads the team in rushing, turning 55 carries into 230 yards and 4 scores.
Cade Weaver has been Young's favorite receiving target, with 6 of his 13 catches going for touchdowns. The versatile senior has also hit 5 of his 6 field goal tries and 16 of 17 extra points, in addition to handling punting duties.
The Norsemen have their own do-it-all spark plug in Bryan Madriz. The senior lines up all over the field on offense, even taking snaps at quarterback, while also serving as the team's kicker.
Senior Dennis Dahlin also spends time under center, with Ty Schimke spearheading the backfield effort. Josh McNish-Heider, Jace Manning and Dylan Marsh anchor the defensive front.
