A game between two of the biggest rivals in North County was sure to be entertaining, and tonight, the Carlsbad Lancers did not disappoint. Lancers sunk the Oceanside Pirates 31-20 on the Pirates’ own turf, taking home an Avocado League conference victory.
The Carlsbad Lancers put points on the board early when Quarterback Troy Bloomquist dished out a 4 yard pass to tight end Cameron Thomas for the touchdown, making it a 7-0 game (PAT good). The Pirates struggled early to get something going. Aside from the 19 yard pick up by wide receiver Kyrin Beachem, Oceanside would ultimately stall out and turn the ball over, following a 7 yard sack by Lancers Colby Whillock.
Pirates defense came through to start the second half, forcing Carlsbad to give up possession on the first drive of the quarter. The next drive, however, was a different story. Carlsbad’s Troy Bloomquist hit WR Joe Fontenot for a 51 yard reception, putting them into Oceanside territory. The Pirates defense made good stops, only surrendering to a Lancers field goal. (10-0)
What PPR’s Rick Willis called, “the play of the week,” came in the end of the 2nd quarter. Under heavy pressure from Pirates defense, Carlsbad QB Troy Bloomquist fumbled the ball, allowing Oceanside defensive lineman Isiah Kaleopa-Tuisee to scoop it up; before being tackled, Isiah lateraled the ball to line backer Asa Boteler who carried it the rest of the way for the Pirates’ first score (10-7 PAT good).
After the half, a 1-yard touchdown by Carlsbad increased their lead 17-7 (PAT good). Struggling to capitalize again, Oceanside gave up possession. There was no slowing down for the Lancers though, as running back Antonio Torres juked and moved 39 yards down field and into the end zone to further the Lancer lead 24-7 (PAT good). The fireworks continued! On the very next play, Pirates QB Alex Miller was picked off by DB Asa Turner, who wasted no time bringing it back 25 yards for the second defensive score of the game (31-7 PAT good). The Pirates battled back and put up significant points in the fourth quarter, but, their efforts were cut short by time and the final score came in at 31-20.

PREVIEW:? This Friday, October 6, we head up the coast to Oceanside’s Pirates Cove! The Oceanside High School Pirates (2-3) will be at home with all hands on deck as they clash with the Carlsbad High School Lancers (3-2). Since both teams are in the hole in their division (0-2) this conference game will be the first win for whomever comes out on top. Oceanside High brings a win from last week’s game against Mater Dei Catholic, while Carlsbad suffered a tough loss against La Costa Canyon despite battling late in the fourth quarter.
Lancers offense is led by senior quarterback Troy Bloomquist, who has an impressive 892 yards and 12 TD’s so far this season. Bloomquist needs to stay sharp if he hopes to beat his opponent. The Pirates senior Joel Lazaro, rushing for 418 yards thus far and averaging 104 yards per game, is going to have to stay true to his stats and continue to move the ball effectively on the ground. Among the Lancers’ volley of strong receivers, senior wide receiver Joe Fontenot will look to further his stats beyond his current 316 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.
Pirates QB Alex Miller needs to make solid throws Friday night and put the ball in the hands of his play makers. Junior WR/RB Kyrin Beachem has the potential to be a force down field in this game, however, the Lancers have to tighten up their run defense due to big threats on the ground from Beachem and Senior RB Jonathan Segi. With a combined rushing total of 584 yards, plus a combined 7 rushing touchdowns, these two players will be key figures in the Pirates’ plan of attack.
The game starts at 7:00 PM at Oceanside High School. If you can’t make it to the game, be sure to watch The Prep Pigskin Report, starting at 10 PM on KUSI.
