The Valley Center Jaguars (6-1) may have potentially clinched the Valley League title Friday night with their 37-21 win over San Pasqual High School (4-3).
Both teams headed in to Week Eight of the Prep Pigskin Report as the only two teams in their league to be undefeated.
The game was a nail-biter the first half, going back and forth repeatedly.
San Pasqual held the momentum to begin the game, capitalizing on Valley Center’s open defense. Shawn Carter found a gap and ran 33-yards to place the Golden Eagles on the Jaguars 10-yard line. Quarterback Westin Erdman ran it in the 10-yards to take an early 7-0 lead.
Valley Center didn’t answer back until the second quarter, slowly making it down the field for a 1-yard touchdown run from Mateo Sinohui. The extra point was blocked by San Pasqual’s Josh Nolan, so the Golden Eagles still held the lead 7-6.
Mateo Sinohui scored another 4-yard touchdown later in the quarter. The Jaguars went for the 2-point conversion and succeeded with a pass from quarterback Rikki Mazetti to Keith Vasquez in the end zone.
San Pasqual would tie the game heading in to the half with another keeper from quarterback Westin Erdman for two yards.
Coming in to the third quarter, Valley Center knew it was time to put the game away. Rikki Mazetti threw a huge pass to Keith Vasquez to start the second half, garnering a 63-yard touchdown.
From then on, the Jaguars continued to pull away, eventually winning 37-21.
Valley Center will continue league play next week at Fallbrook (1-7). San Pasqual will be playing a non-conference game against Oceanside (2-5) for Week Nine of the Prep Pigskin Report.
