Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week: Clairemont 24, Crawford 13

Posted: Updated:

In this week’s Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week, the Clairemont Chieftains welcomed the Crawford Colts for Week Eight of the Prep Pigskin Report.  What looked to be a low scoring game, ended with an action packed second half along with a Chieftains 24-13 win.  Clairemont advances to 4-3 and 1-1 in league whereas Crawford falls 5-2 and 0-1 in league.

The Chieftains celebrated their homecoming tonight where Jayden Cruz and Angelina Mahaphom were crowned Senior King and Queen.  Though most of the festivities started at halftime, the performances and crowning were the main excitement of the night thus far.

The Colts and Chieftains both got off to a slow start as both defenses continuously held each respective offensive teams to punt.  Clairemont would take a 17-7 lead going into the half.  Jay Rensfield would find the end zone twice for the Chieftains.

In the fourth quarter, Shawn Balala finds Marlow Jenkins for a 40 yard touchdown pass cutting the Chieftains lead 17-13.  Crawford would try to get their offense going on their next drive but Clairemont’s Dylan Suitts was a force to be reckon with.  Suitts was a big part of the Chieftain’s defense tonight as well as the mobile big man on offense.

The Chieftains would extend their lead and finish the game off with the third touchdown of the night for Rensfield making him the Nelson Photo Player of the Game.     Next week, Clairemont will host the Kearny Komets (6-1, 1-1) while Crawford has a homecoming of their own as they host their first home game in over three years against the Coronado Islanders (2-4, 0-1).  The Prep Pigskin Report doesn’t stop on Friday nights.  You can also see full versions of featured segments on under Prep Pigskin Report as well as view complete raw highlights of previous weeks.

PREVIEW: Week Eight of the Prep Pigskin Report brings this Red Jacket and this weeks Pigskin Idol, Calista Rodal, to Clairemont where the Chieftains (3-3, 0-1) host the Crawford Colts (5-1, 0-0) for Homecoming. Last season when both teams met up, the Chieftains took a 29-8 victory.  But for the Colts, it’s a new season and won’t dwell on last season’s matchup.

Coming off a bye week, the Chieftains had the opportunity to get healthy and get mentally as well as physically ready for the remainder of the season.  Dynamic duo Griffin Catarius and Dylan Suitts plan to do what they do best.  From Catarius’ passing to Suitts and Suitts taking care of business on the defensive end, these two are ones to keep your eye on this week. In addition, Jay Rensfield is also a notable player on both ends of the ball as a rusher and leader on defense.  Though they are key players, the bye week allowed the team to regroup and take on the Colts team altogether.

The Colts entered Week Seven undefeated but ended the week with their first loss.  However, with every new week, there is an opportunity to start another winning streak.  Leading the offense is quarterback Shawn Balala who has a total of 656 passing yards and total of 13 touchdowns.  One of his main targets is Ali Musa with 303 yards on 17 receptions.  Musa and Niko Perry have recorded 23 and 21 total tackles respectively.

Can the Chieftains get their offense rolling or will Colts defense led by Musa and Perry shut them down?
