Escondido Cougars 23, Del Norte Nighthawks 6

Posted: Updated:

The final score doesn't reinforce how competitive this game was, but both the Escondido Cougars and Del Norte Nighthawks brought their all for this Friday night matchup. Both sides shined in the running game but Escondido's defense ultimately proved to be the difference maker in their 23-6 victory.

Things immediately turned in the Cougars favor thanks to Jake Frankfather's touchdown run from 27 yards out. Del Norte cut the Cougar lead to 7-3, but Escondido would quickly extend it to 16-3 thanks to a forced safety followed by a 51 yard connection from Robert Ramos to Shawn Moscowitz. Del Norte hit one more field goal to make the score 16-6 but after that it was all Escondido. Shawn Moscowitz proved he excels on both sides of the ball by returning an interception all the way to the house to cement a victory for his Escondido team.

Running backs Jake Franfather and Kevin Rodriguez were the driving force behind Escondido's offensive success. The duo gained the majority of the Cougars yards while chewing away at valuable clock time. Now at 4-4 a winning record is right out of reach, repeating tonight's success against Valley Center will be crucial. Del Norte hope to bounce back from a tough 1-6 start by upsetting Mt Carmel next week. If running back Jonathan Cappiello can have a similar performance then don't count this Nighthawk team out. PREVIEW: This week the PPR will be bringing our gear to Escondido to bring you this battle between the hometown Cougars and the Del Norte Nighthawks. The 3-4 Escondido Cougars snapped a 2 game losing streak in last week’s 17-0 victory over the Fallbrook Warriors. A shutout is a confidence boost for any team, and on top of that this puts the team at .500 in league play. The Cougars have had a very inconsistent season thus far, but a big night from the Cougars quarterback Robbie Ramos Jr. could be the difference between a win or loss.

Del Norte has struggled up to this point with a 1-5 record, and it starts with the offense. Since defeating Fallbrook in their second game of the season Del Norte has failed to score more than 7 points in the four ensuing losses. Quarterback Noolan Booher and receiver Alex Moore have built strong chemistry in the last couple weeks, continuing that could lead to an upset for the Nighthawks. Del Norte has a thin roster with less than 30 players, so expect these athletes to make highlights on both sides of the ball. Tune into the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday to see which team is able to secure the victory!
