Hoover High School students prepare for college

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Hoover High School students in every grade participated in college activities on the high school campus as part of College Prep Day.

Students at Hoover High are excited about College.

"I'm hoping to go to SDSU."

Senior Louis Cho is ready to go, already wearing an Aztec shirt.

College Prep day is put on by the "College Avenue Compact Program."

"We are a college prep program. We work with the entire Hoover campus. We are all about providing access to all our students to go to college. Our logo is "Making College Possible.'' says Melissa Naranjo, Interim Executive Director for CAC.

These high school teenagers are getting a head start.

"Coming from a poor neighborhood it's very important that we know this information," says Cho.

Throughout the day, students go to different college seminars. The financial aid workshop is a big one.

"We learned about FASTFA, Cal Grants. They gave us information about all of that," says Cho

Nathan Baughn, another Hoover High School Senior says "a lot of our families haven't been to college so this is a big step for us. We are kind of leading our families into what we are supposed to be doing."

The other important seminar is on scholarships.

Administrators say over the years Hoover High school has changed to a college-going culture.

"Our percentage rate of kids going off to 2-year and 4-year colleges has increased dramatically," says Tanya Pringle, School counselor.

In fact, when you ask high school students, they'll tell you College Prep Day is every day.

"It's more than just education. For us, it's our future, you know," said Nathan Baughn, senior at Hoover High.
