18-year-old arrested in connection to shooting near Eastlake High School

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA — Police arrested an 18-year-old man from Chula Vista in connection to a shooting Friday morning at a pharmacy near Eastlake High School, which prompted an hour-long lockdown at the high school and a nearby elementary school.

Chula Vista police said Christian Olmos attempted to steal alcohol from the Walgreens pharmacy on Eastlake Parkway, less than a mile from the high school, about 8:20 a.m. on Friday.

"Our investigation found that the suspect tried to steal alcohol from the Walgreens,'' Chula Vista acting police Capt. Eric Thunberg said. "When employees prevented him from doing so, he exited the store, pulled out a handgun and fire a round back towards the store and fled.''

The employee who was targeted was not shot or injured, police said.

After the shot was fired, police said Olmos ran toward a nearby apartment complex, where he was located and arrested. Police said the gun he used in the robbery was loaded and had been stolen from a residence earlier that morning.

Both the high school and Olympic View Elementary, about a mile away from the pharmacy, were placed on lockdown until 9:30 a.m. as a precaution.

Olmos has been booked in county jail and faces charges of robbery, residential burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.
