Bonita Vista made it a game early but in the end Otay Ranch used a physical attack and opportunistic defense to win in dominating fashion 61-21.
It was Homecoming at Southwestern College; the home of the Bonita Vista Barons. Bonita Vista won the toss and deferred to the second half. However, instead of kicking off they went with the onside kick and recovered it. A few plays later they scored on a 5 yard touchdown run by Ray Terrones taking a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kick the Barons went with the onside kick again and again recovered. This time Josh Lira thwarted the drive with an interception and Gus Espiritu finished the drive off with a 5 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7.
The game went back and forth with Franklin Forbes in at QB for the injured Isaac Hernandez throwing a 37 yard touchdown pass to Ray Terrones followed by Otay Ranch’s Puka Stewart connecting with Darian Williams for a 32 yard touchdown pass.
The second half was a different story as the Mustangs took control of the game. Espiritu ran for 4 touchdowns in the game and Darian Williams added a pick six as Otay Ranch won 61-21. They improve to 6-3 on the season and are 3-0 in the Metro-Mesa League. After a bye next week the Mustangs play Mater Dei for the league title. Otay Ranch has clinched at least a tie for the crown.
Bonita Vista fell to 0-9 and will host Eastlake next week on Senior Night.
Preview: Bonita Vista hosts Otay Ranch Friday night at Southwestern College and the Barons (0-8) are still looking for their first win of the season. Meanwhile, the Mustangs (5-3) will be trying to hold serve in the Metro-Mesa League before facing Mater Dei in the season finale in a game that will likely decide the League title.
First year head coach Aaron Jones knew there would be growing pains this season as he had to teach the coaches and the players a brand new wide-open style of offense. They have also played a difficult schedule with three of their eight games being against Top 10 teams. The new offense has been shutout in half of those games. Next year Bonita Vista will have a new stadium on campus and Coach Jones will have a year under his belt at the helm.
Otay Ranch comes in with a 2-0 record in league play with just the Barons standing in their way for an undefeated League showdown on November 11th with Mater Dei. After a slow start the Mustangs have won three straight led by the bruising combination of Gus Espiritu, Sammy Paranada, and Alfredo Garcia in the backfield. Defensively Paranada also leads the way with a team high 6 sacks from his DE spot.
