The El Capitan Vaqueros stormed in and ruined the Valhalla Norsemen’s homecoming game. The Vaqueros won 51-14.
It isn’t clear who played better in the first half; the Vaquero offense or the defense.
The Norsemen were only able to get two first downs in the first half. El Capitan forced 3 “three and outs” in the first half alone.
As for the Vaquero offense, it was Wick Hauser who stood out for El Cap. Hauser threw for 142 passing yards in the first half with two touchdowns.
One of those touchdowns was a 54 yard connection to Yaphet Yokley. It made the game 14-0 and there was no looking back for the Vaqueros.
Antonio Olivieri got in on the scoring party with a 2 yard rushing touchdown. Connor Roosa also wanted to take part in the end zone party. He ran in from 16 yards out.
Daniel Estrada booted a 32 yard field goal in to make it 31-0 El Capitan. Valhalla got on the board as the halftime clock expired. Bryan Madriz threw a 5 yard touchdown.
The final ended 51-14 El Capitan. The Vaqueros got their first league win of the season while the Valhalla Norsemen are still looking for their first Grossmont Hills win.
Up next, the Vaqueros host West Hills and the Norsemen visit Steele Canyon.
Preview: The Week 9 matchup between the Valhalla Norsemen and the El Capitan Vaqueros features two historic East County programs.
Both the Norsemen and the Vaqueros are coming off of 2016 playoff appearances.
Valhalla (2-5, 0-2) has struggled in the first two Grossmont Hills League matchups. They look to turn it around against a Vaquero team that they are all too familiar with.
Over the last four years the teams have split 2-2 however, the Norsemen have won the last two years. This rivalry has been going back and forth over the last decade. It is just part of the reason this matchup is so exciting.
The Norsemen had sixteen seniors graduate from last year’s team. New guys have had to step up in new varsity spots.
El Capitan (2-5, 0-2) has also had similar struggles in the Grossmont Hills League so far. The Vaqueros lost 17 seniors last year just like Valhalla.
The Vaqueros have wins against two strong opponents, Patrick Henry and Valley Center.
El Cap will try and channel their week 3 and 4 performances.
