Small School Game of the Week: University City Centurions 54, Hoover Cardinals 6

The city league match-up between University City (7-1) and Hoover (1-7) ended with a homecoming win for University City 54-6. 

It was a great night to be a Centurion. First of all, congratulations to Ms. Isabella Nuñez and Conor McCabe on homecoming queen and king. Secondly, UC dominated the field at their homecoming game.

Start if in the first quarter Gunnar Gray finds Casey Granfors for an 80 yard touchdown pass to start off the game and to be the first to put numbers on the board. Moments later, UC Marcel Patterson for a nice 7 yard touchdown run bringing the score 12-0. Still in the first quarter, first play of the drive, Gunnar Gray to E'lonie Rico who runs it in for a 42 yard touchdown. First quarter ended with UC in the lead 19-0.

Now in the second quarter, Patterson again this time with an 8 yard touchdown run. Score 26-0. later in the second quarter, Gray finds Granfors this time for a 55 yard touchdown pass. 

Hoover with the ball trying to throw some points on the board, but here comes Granfors with a one-handed interception and runs it in for a pick 6, 53 yard touchdown to be exact and the first half ended 40-0. 

Right at the start of the second half, first play for UC, Marcel Patterson comes in hot with an 80 yard touchdown run leading the Centurions 47-0.

The Hoover Cardinals did end up scoring with a nice 4 yard touchdown run by Manny Correa. 

Casey Granfors ended the night with one interception and 4 touchdowns and lead the Centurions to a 54-6 victory on their homecoming night.

Hoover will have a home game against Serra next Friday night, and University City will travel to Patrick Henry.

PREVIEW: The Small School Game of the Week in Week 9 of the Prep Pigskin Report takes us to University City where the Centurions will take on the Hoover Cardinals for a City League match up.
The Cardinals are 1-6 and 0-1 in league play. Head coach Jimmy Morgans is an alum of Hoover high school and is in his 2nd year as the Cardinals head coach. Hoover is coming off a tough loss against Coronado last Friday night 28-3. The Cardinals did defeat Orange Glenn early this season 17-14. Hoover has a hard time putting some numbers on the board but if they stick to the run game and try their best to not turn the ball over. Quarterback Manny Correa and running back Jacoy McNealy lead the offense.
Other key players to keep an eye out for on offense is Alex Gonzalez, Julio Solis and Alex Serrato, and on defense you have Po Kry and Vicente Pacheco.
On the other side of the ball, the University City Centurions coming off a win against Serra 56-3. University City is 6-1 and 1-0 in league play. The Centurions have one loss to Mar Vista, but they have defeated Sweetwater, Monte Vista, Scripps Ranch, La Jolla Country Day and Crawford. Head coach Ryan Price is in his third year as head coach at University City.

Sophomore Gunnar Gray is the leader of the young Centurions offense. Gray has 1351 passing yards for 15 passing touchdowns. His main target is junior Casey Granfors who has 502 receiving yards for 7 touchdowns and junior Jurne Smith with 248 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior Jake Jones leads the defense with some help from Granfors.
