The Mount Carmel Sun Devils improved to 3-5 after defeating the Del Norte Nighthawks 28-20 in a Palomar League battle Friday night.

After falling behind 7-0 in the second quarter, the Sun Devils offense exploded for 21 points to take a two touchdown lead into the half.

Senior running back Spencer Jackson lead the Sun Devils with two rushing touchdowns, including the game winner in the fourth quarter

"Spencer, he's the heart and soul of our team offensively." Head Coach John Anderson said of Jackson. "He plays middle linebacker on defense. Also special shout out to Kekoa Willkomm. Spencer had a little helmet issue so Kekoa came in and got us down the field so Spencer can score."

It was a game that both teams knew they needed to win.

After falling behind 21-7 at the half. Del Norte, who fell to 1-7, scored on their opening drive of the second half on a 8 yard touchdown run by Jamie Meoli.

After Jackson's score for the Sun Devils, the Nighthawks drove down the field and got to one score yet again after an 11 yard touchdown pass from Noolan Booher to Garret Ostrander.

Del Norte stopped Mt. Carmel on their next drive and had a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Nighthawks their hopes ended after throwing an interception with a minute to go and no timeouts remaining.

Del Norte will take on Rancho Bernardo at home next week. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

Mt. Carmel will travel to San Marcos with the hopes of carrying momentum from this game into next week.

"Gives us confidence going into next week," Coach Anderson said. "We got a tough opponent against San Marcos next week. We're going to enjoy this and get back to it tomorrow morning."

Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

PREVIEW: This Friday night, the Nighthawks of Del Norte travel to Mount Carmel to take on the Sun Devils in a Palomar League match-up.

Del Norte, 1-6, enters the game on a five game losing streak and at the bottom of the league standings at 0-3. Mount Carmel is 2-5 and on a three game losing streak. The Sun Devils are 1-3 in league play.

With three games left in the season and Ramona running away with the league, both teams are hoping to avoid a last place finish in the Palomar League. Del Norte has struggled on both offense and defense, They have been outscored 50 to 289 and have scored more than seven points just once this season.

Mount Carmel, who has also struggled on both sides of the ball, will look to their defense to win them their second league game of the season. The Sun Devils have recorded 20 sacks this season, according to maxpreps.com. Sophomore Ty Virgin and senior Kevin Rowe each have five sacks.

Who they will be pressuring in the backfield remains to be seen. The Nighthawks have had five different players complete passes this season. The lack of consistency at quarterback has not helped the offense put points on the board.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m. Tune in at 10:30 p.m. to catch all the highlights between Del Norte and Mount Carmel on the Prep Pigskin Report.
