Grossmont Foothillers 51, Steele Canyon Cougars 14

Posted: Updated:

The Grossmont Foothillers (6-2) entered Friday’s game against the Steele Canyon Cougars (4-4) having won three straight games and scoring over 50 points in each win. They would continue both streaks, downing the Cougars 51-14 while achieving a four game win streak.

At the beginning of the game, Steele Canyon was able to strike first with a Thomas Fishburne touchdown pass to Valon Martinez. The Cougars were able to keep the Foothillers on the back foot (no pun intended) by maintaining long drives on offense with Fishburne avoiding defenders and constantly escaping trouble. However, he couldn’t avoid Zac Jones picking him off and streaking towards the end zone. While he wouldn’t score, Thomas Mangum would as he took a handoff from Jaime Odom and bolted into the endzone. With an earlier touchdown run by Odom, the score became 14-7 after a quarter of play.

Steele Canyon would respond with another long drive to begin the second quarter, capping off the run with a Fishburne touchdown. However, the turnovers would continue to haunt the Cougars, as Fishburne was intercepted into the endzone by Noah Cress, and was ambushed the next series by a swarm of Foothillers. The slippery Fishburne was unable to escape trouble this time, and coughed up the ball after getting pounced on by lineman Cooper Zoellner. The rest of the second quarter then turned into the Shevell Shepard Jr Show, as he would rattle off touchdown runs of 20, 20, and 15 yards while making impressive jukes and cuts to run the score up to 34-14 at halftime.

While the third quarter was relatively quiet scoring wise, the fourth quarter saw Grossmont put the game away. Shortly after Amber Huff made the score 37-14 with a field goal, Zac Jones grabbed another errant Fishburne pass and took it all the way to the house for a score. Shepard would collect one last touchdown in the final minutes, and Grossmont would take the win in front of their home fans.

Steele Canyon will look to capture a win in a big game against the Valhalla Norsemen, but Grossmont certainly has a test, as they welcome the 7-1 Helix Highlanders who have allowed seven or less points in all but one of their games.

PREVIEW: Week 9 of high school football is here and this week will bring us an exciting matchup as the 4-3 Steele Canyon Cougars square off with the 5-2 Grossmont Foothillers in a conference game.

The Foothillers are currently riding a three-game winning streak, and Grossmont’s offense has scored over 50 points in each win. This is due to the white-hot performance of sophomore quarterback Jamie Odom, who has passed for over 550 yards and has thrown six touchdown passes, including four to Josh Moala. Senior running back Shevell Sterling Jr has also been on a scorching pace, as he’s collected eight touchdowns and ran for over 400 yards. The defense has also been a force to be reckoned with, as they have intercepted five passes with senior Andrew Lira picking off three out of the five. Steele Canyon has their work cut out for them and will have to contain both offensive aspects while navigating through a tough defense.

Steele Canyon is coming off of a nice win against the West Hills Wolf Pack and will be looking to stop this rampant Grossmont squad. The Cougars do know how to snap win streaks, as they stopped West Hills’ five game winning streak with the help of David Lipscomb’s clutch defensive performance and excellent special teams play. The offense will be led by senior quarterback Thomas Fishburne, while the defense will be tasked with putting a stop to the streaking Foothiller offense. The Cougars will have to stay sharp on defense in order to keep the Foothillers off the board so the offense can stake out an early lead.
