Small School Game of the Week: Santa Fe Christian Eagles 45, La Jolla Country Day Torreys 21
By Maddie Sinclair
The tradition continues for Santa Fe Christian(5-4) as they secured another win over La Jolla Country Day (4-4) 45-21. The Eagles have won every time they have met with the Torrey's since 1994.
The Eagles were the first to throw some points on the board. Kian Hogan the first to score with a 5 yard touchdown run. Later La Jolla Country Day answers right back, Ej Kreutzman finds #9 Anthony Bland for a 9 yard touchdown pass. 9 to number 9 to even the score 7-7. Immediately after comes Chase Baptista with the 95 yard kick return for a touchdown to take the lead back 14-7.
Later in the second quarter Anthony Rossetti gets a nice little 11 yard touchdown run to remain in the lead 21-7. Later, quarterback Michael Linguadoca keeps the ball, fakes out a couple of Torrey defenders and runs it in for a 22 yard touchdown run. The Eagles end the half in the lead 28-14.
Whatever Coach Hales said to the team in the locker room during halftime really helped the Torrey's come out strong. The Torrey's recover their own on side kick which soon lead to a 38 yard touchdown by Anthony Bland. La Jolla Country Day only down by one touchdown.
But then the Eagles came back soaring. After a field goal and a one yard touchdown by Linguadoca, an interception by Chase Baptista and another touchdown by Baptista, the Eagles go on to win 45-21 and keep their winning streak over the Torrey's alive.
La Jolla Country Day will play Bishop's next Friday night and the Santa Fe Christian Eagles will travel to take on Try-City Christian.
PREVIEW: The Small School Game of the Week in Week 10 of the Prep Pigskin Report takes us to La Jolla Country Day where the Torreys will take on the Santa Fe Christian Eagles for a Coastal League match up.
The Santa Fe Christian Eagles lost about 24 seniors last year and they do not have any returning players starting on the offensive line. John Wallace is in his 5th year with Santa Fe Christian, and the Eagles return as a young team with Michael Linguadoca at quarterback. Junior QB Linguadoca has already recorded 584 passing yards for 6 touchdowns and 275 rushing yards for 3 touchdowns so far this season.
Demitri Washington is a huge force at running back and on defense. He has 243 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Washington has also racked up 45 total tackles and 5 sacks. Another defensive force is Luke Sanders who had 46 total tackles and one sack. The Eagles have a 4-4 record and 1-1 league play record.
On the opposite side of the field, the La Jolla Country Day Torreys will celebrate their senior night with 9 seniors on the team. The Torreys are coming off a big win against Orange Glen 42-12, and have a 4-3 record and 2-0 in league play.
Tyler Hales returns for his 4th year as head coach. Last year the Torreys won a section Division IV title and were state Division 5A runners-up. Braxton Burmeister was a huge part of La Jolla Country Day's success. He was their star record breaking quarterback holding the the county’s career leader in touchdown passes, passing yards and total offense.
Taking Burmeisters spot at quarterback is sophomore EJ Kreutzman who has a total of 882 passing yards for 8 touchdowns and 56 rushing yards for 2 touchdowns. Along with Burmeister being gone, the Torreys only have three returning starters, Spencer Alligood, Michael Chandler and Caleb Petry.
If La Jolla Country Day wins against Santa Fe Christian, then they will be playing Bishops in the Coastal League Title Game in week 11. Before that happens, the Torreys have to win against the Eagles which hasn't been done yet. Santa Fe Christian has won for the last 6 years dominating the Torreys 49-21.
