The best way to heal from heartbreak, recover and get the WIN! The rivalry, the upset, the surprise are a few of the words that can describe Week 10 in the South Bay. The San Ysidro vs. Southwest SD match up proved to be an unexpected one. Southwest SD Raiders slashed a 50-38 win over the prowling Cougars. Southwest SD improves 1-1 in league play and the season overall 3-6. San Ysidro is also at 1-1 in league play and 3-6 in the season overall.
First quarter of the game started off with ta bang, the Cougars spent no time messing around they opened scoreboard right away for a 7-0 lead. Southwest’s Joshua Sanchez and Leonard Hoar spent to no time to over think their place on the scoreboard. Sanchez completed runs that advanced into Cougar territory; with no hesitation Hoar punched the ball in for touchdowns!
Second quarter of the game only kept getting better! Joel Young had an amazing run down the field that lead to a scoring play by Hoar. Hoar completed a 15 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-14. Sanchez completed an 8-yard touchdown run. At the half the Raiders led 30-17.
Third quarter, Hoar wanted more and got more touchdown runs putting the Raiders ahead in the game. The Raiders defensive completed a key play that spotlight their talent and ability to defend their home field. Jamrea Lowery forced fumbled a Cougar ball that was recovered by Noah Bastelleros and ran for a 30 yard touchdown run. What a defensive play by Southwest SD defense! When the Cougars tried to catch up it was not match for the Raider defense, they closed the quarter with a 50-24 lead.
Cougars were able to get more points on the board in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to defeat the Raiders. The final score 50-38 Southwest SD. The shovel went to the Southwest SD Raiders on senior night and the rivalry game.

PREVIEW: The tenth time will be the charm, charm in high school football of course! Week 10 in the South Bay only keeps getting better. The San Ysidro Cougars come into this week with a much-anticipated win over the Castle Park Trojans. The win 35-5 win sets them at a 3-5 record, great way to start the first game counting towards league play. The Southwest SD Raiders who are recovering from a heartbreaking 14-7 loss to Montgomery will host the Cougars on their home field. The loss sets them at a 2-6 record for the season, however with victory so close to them winning league games can be attainable.
Throughout the season San Ysidro’s Alejandro Bonneau, Junior Bueno, Jazz Gill and Jeremiah Martinez have proven themselves to be essential to the Cougar roster. No matter the ups or downs of the season, these student athletes keep their determination and focus on the football field. Bonneau and Martinez go into the game with the confidence of getting points on the scoreboard. Both capitalized on touchdown opportunities last week. Bueno proved his ability as a quarterback and leader on the field. He completed passes that lead to first downs and touchdowns on the field. Passes that Gill received and contributed to the Cougar running game.
Southwest will look at Leonard Hoar, Daniel Belton, and Jovan Young to make their first league victory a reality. Leonard Hoar authored the opening touchdown in last week’s game against Montgomery. On his senior year of varsity high school football all is left on the field! The underclassmen will look at him as an example what it means to be a Southwest SD Raider.
