El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week: Steele Canyon Cougar - KUSI News - San Diego, CA

El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week: Steele Canyon Cougars 45, Valhalla Norsemen 0

Posted: Updated:

The Jamacha Helmet is returning to Steele Canyon for the first time since 2013, after the Cougars (5-4) rampaged to a 45-0 win over the Valhalla Norsemen (2-7) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.

After three straight wins from Valhalla, Steele Canyon started this year's rendition of the Rancho San Diego rivalry with big plays on both sides of the ball. Junior defensive lineman Ian Miller intercepted an attempted screen pass from Norseman quarterback Kyle Grygiel, deputizing for injured signal-callers Bryan Madriz and Dennis Dahlin. The Cougars' Thomas Fishburne finished the ensuing drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Nathaniel Gorden.

After a Valhalla punt, Steele Canyon's first play was a deep ball from Fishburne to Jordan Anderson, who cruised 73 yards down the sideline for a 14-0 lead. Robert Whitehead then grabbed a tipped ball for another Cougar interception. And on the next snap, Deontae McKinney ran 38 yards to put Steele Canyon up 21-0.

Both sides close out the Grossmont Hills schedule next week. Steele Canyon welcomes in El Capitan, while the Norsemen return home to host Helix.

PREVIEW: The Jamacha Helmet is up for grabs this Friday, as the Valhalla Norsemen (2-6) make the trip to face the Steele Canyon Cougars (4-4) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.

The Norsemen have won the past three contests against their Rancho San Diego neighbors, including a second half rally for a 21-14 win in last year's edition.

After a promising 2-1 start to this season, Charles Bussey's squad enters the week on a five-game skid. Jack-of-all-trades Bryan Madriz has been at the center of Valhalla's offensive exploits, and he'll match up against a Cougar defense led by defensive end Mikel Oliver and cornerback Perry Steele.

Oliver and Steele also line up on offense for Steele Canyon. A three-year starter at quarterback, Thomas Fishburne plays both sides of the ball as well, slotting in at safety for the defense. Jordan Anderson is the top threat at receiver.
