Unfortunately for Mar Vista, tonight’s Homecoming was spoiled by the visiting Chula Vista Spartans. Chula Vista won by a score of 14-3. In a game that was a big defensive battle, each team struggled to move the football. The Spartans were able to capitalize on a key turnover that proved to be the turning point of this game.
In the first quarter, Mar Vista’s quarterback Alexander Gutierrez hit Marcus Ramirez for a 27 yard gain. This completion set up Kicker Cesar Macias for a 35 yard field goal. This put the Mariners up three to zero. Going into halftime the Mariners defense came up with two big sacks that kept the Spartans out of field goal range.
However, Chula Vista made the necessary halftime adjustments. Their defense came out strong in the third quarter with Kajahan Duncan intercepting a pass and running it back 24 yards for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter Duncan iced the game with a 20 yard touchdown run up the middle.
Both teams can hold their heads high with how well their defenses played this week. Looking ahead Chula Vista will play their rival Sweetwater next week at home. Mar Vista will look to rebound from two straight losses as they host Hilltop.
As always the Prep Pigskin Report will be back next week, so be sure to tune in next Friday night at 10:30pm.
It’s week ten of the high school football season, and league play is in full swing. This week’s matchup has the 4-4 Chula Vista Spartans traveling to face the 5-3 Mar Vista Mariners.
Chula Vista is coming off a tough loss to division opponent Hilltop. The Spartans lost more than just on the scoreboard; their offense lost their Quarterback, Darrion Hamilton, to what appeared to be a knee injury. It will be important to monitor his status for this week, as well as backup Quarterback, Moses Contreras’, ability to step in as starting Quarterback. On offense, Senior Receivers Justin Cantwell, and Ubaldo Nolasco lead the Spartans. Both receivers have three touchdowns on the year. Look for Sophomore Running Back Kajahan Duncan to be more involved in the offense this week, as he is averaging 5.9 yards per carry, and has four touchdowns on the year.
Mar Vista is coming off an away loss where Sweetwater shut them out. The Mariner offense moved the ball at times but struggled to keep drives alive. A big reason was due to their multiple turnovers on the night. Ball security will definitely be a focus for the Mariner’s offense this week. Quarterback Jacob Beck has thrown for 1218 yards on the season and will look to add to his total this week. On defense Niko Figueroa leads the Mariners. He has 15 total sacks on the season and will definitely cause problems for Chula Vista’s offense this week.
