NB I-5 lanes closed Tuesday morning after deadly crash

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — One person was killed this morning in a crash on Interstate 5 east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and all northbound lanes except for one remained closed more than three hours after the deadly collision, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at 2:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes just south of Villa De La Valle, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said. The exact circumstances of the initial crash were not immediately clear, but authorities believe the person killed was a man who got out of his car following an earlier crash and was
struck by a vehicle.

That man -- driving a sedan with Arizona license plates and believed to be in his 20s -- had fled from his car to seek safety on the shoulder of the freeway after he crashed into the center divider. After his empty car was struck by an SUV, the man was killed when he was struck by a second SUV while trying to run back to his car to retrieve his cellphone, the television station reported.

CHP officers initially diverted all traffic off the freeway at the Via De La Valle exit, but the HOV lane was soon reopened. Just after 5:30 a.m., officers opened three more lanes.

As morning rush-hour traffic built up approaching the fatal crash, a secondary crash was reported about 4:40 a.m. involving at least three vehicles just a little south of the initial crash site, according to a CHP incident log.

No injuries were immediately reported from that collision.
