Jersey Mike's City Game of the Week: Helix Highlanders 19, Madison Warhawks 11

Posted: Updated:

In the 2nd round of the Open Division playoffs, the Helix Highlanders battled their way to victory winning over the Madison Warhawks 19-11.

Surprising start to tonight’s game when both teams went scoreless in the first quarter. Knowing the Helix Highlanders who have an average of scoring 45.4 points per game to the Madison Warhawks 38.7 points per game, it is shocking that neither of them scored in the first quarter let alone a 12-0 half. The Highlanders first score was in the start of the 2nd quarter where kicker Keaton Chase scored a field goal making it 3-0. In an attempt to battle back, the Warhawks forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the four-yard line. Unfortunately, it was short lived when safety Jayden Tauanuu tackled RB Ke’onte Springs in his own end zone for the safety putting the Highlander up 5-0. On the punt return, WR Isaiah Wooden danced his way through Highlander defenders scoring a 55-yard touchdown making the score 12-0 at the half. The Warhawks put up a tough fight but the clock did not work in their favor because they did not score until the 4th quarter. Helix ended up victorious with the final score 19-11.

Helix will go on to play San Marcos in the Open Division Semi Finals next week.

Preview: As we roll into playoff season, this week the red jackets will be at Helix High School as they host the Madison Warhawks for this open division matchup. The Warhawks placed 3rd in the Western League and 4th for the Division 1 standings. Their opponent, the Helix Highlanders, are 9-1 and placed 1st in the in the Grossmont-Hills league and 2nd in the Division 1 standings.

The Warhawks have a tough matchup against Helix, however don’t count them out yet. The Warhawks are coming off a big win against Mira Mesa the week prior. They average 38.7 scores per game and allow 17.8 points per game. They have the ability to score and when given the opportunity, can really prove trouble for any opponent. On the other hand, Helix is a tough pill to swallow in terms of matchups. The Highlanders average 45.4 points per game and only allowed 4.4 points per game. They are one of the toughest teams in San Diego defensively and not to mention, left 9 teams scoring a touchdown or less. With the high amount of talent and competitiveness within the Open Division, anything can happen during playoff times.
