2/16/19 Boys Basketball: Torrey Pines 58, Poway 54
The CIFSDS Open Division Quarterfinals matchup between Poway and Torrey Pines lived up to the hype, and then some. At the end of the night, he Falcons came out on top, edging a resilient Titans team, 58-54, to move on to the semifinals next Wednesday.
It wasn’t easy, as a matter of fact, the Falcons found themselves in an 8-point deficit early on in the game. Torrey Pines would chip away little by little at the Poway lead, doubling up the 2nd quarter scoring, 24-12, to take a 32-27 lead in the locker room at halftime.
Poway came out firing in the 3rd quarter, out-scoring the Falcons 11-8 in the frame. Senior, Adam Sevier hit a jumper at the buzzer to cut the lead to just 2 points at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The 4th quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the game being tied on 3 separate occasions. Poway played the foul game late in the contest, and it almost worked out when they were down by only 2 points and they grabbed the rebound on a missed Falcons free throw, only to lose possession on an errant pass that went out of bounds.
With 2 seconds left in the game, Bryce Pope hit a couple of free throws to seal the deal. The UC San Diego commit would finish with a game-high, 26 points for the Falcons. Michael Pope had 10, while Noah Viera added 8.
Garrett Pyle led Poway in scoring with 16, while Adam Sevier added 14 for the Titans.
2nd-seeded Torrey Pines will play the 7th-seeded Mission Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.
