2/26/20 Boys Basketball: Torrey Pines 56, St. Augustine 54

The Pit was out in full force as two-seeded St. Augustine welcomed in the three seed Torrey Pines in an Open Division boys basketball semifinal.

The Saints are led early in the contest senior Nakial Cross, as his emphatic dunk in front of the student section helped give St. Augustine the advantage.

The Falcons were paced by junior Chris Howell, who scored 9 of Torrey Pines’ first 12 points and would finish with 13 on the night.

After the break, the stars came out to shine, as Falcon junior Nick Herrmann (team-high 15 points) and Saints senior Chibuzo Agbo put their respective teams on their backs.

With just under 10 seconds to play, Torrey senior Brandon Angel converts on a pair of free throws to give the visitors the two-point lead.

St. Augustine senior Luke Haupt tries to tie it on the other end, but his shot comes up just short.

Torrey Pines survives with the 56-54 win, and will meet fellow Del Mar Heights Road occupant Cathedral Catholic in Saturday’s Open Division championship.
