Victims named in sailboat accident that killed two
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An investigation is underway into a weekend sailboat accident on San Diego Bay that killed a man and his 73-year-old father and injured at least seven other people, including two children.
The 35-foot vessel capsized and sank near Shelter Island shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
All the occupants — seven adults and three children — were thrown into the water, and nearby boaters and harbor police officers hurried over to pull them out of the bay, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.
Pronounced dead at the scene were 44-year-old Jun Chen and his father, Chao Chen, both of Rancho Penasquitos. Medics took four other adults to UCSD Medical Center and three patients, including a 10-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy, to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
An eighth person later showed up at a hospital, claiming to have been injured in the boating accident, as well, Luque said.
Investigators were investigating the possibility that the vessel's retractable keel was not deployed, allowing for winds to push the vessel over, according to Luque.
