About 20 percent of Americans suffer from allergies
Spring is here, and we all love to enjoy our spring weather but millions of children and adults have allergies which make us and our eyes miserable.
Today, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman is here to tell us some effective and easy tips to make allergy season less irritating:
Approximately 20 percent of Americans suffer from allergies, with symptoms that include itchy eyes, swollen eyelids, watery eyes and redness. The most common culprit is pollen, tiny particles released into the air by trees, grass and weeds.
“Cells in the eyes release histamines and other chemicals as a protective measure whenever they’re exposed to such allergens,” explains Sandy Feldman MD, Medical Director of Clearview Eye & Laser Medical Center in San Diego. “The clear covering over the front of the eye is very similar to the material lining the inside of the nose, so allergens can trigger an allergic response in both areas.”
“Seasonal allergies can make you miserable, but the good news is they’re temporary,” says Dr. Feldman. “If they cause you severe irritation or pain, be sure to see your eye doctor for an exam. You also might consider getting LASIK, as not having to wear contact lenses can really make a difference for people who suffer from allergies.”
