KUSI Car Expert Dave Stall reviews the 2014 Acura MDX AWD: “A pure joy to drive!”

Review date: May 1st, 2014
The need for a family style SUV seems to be ramping back up. Every manufacturer has one to offer and the Acura has hit the streets running. Being the upper crust of Honda, Acura spares no expense giving the owner an SUV above the rest.

I test drove the 2014 Acura MX for a week and found it to be a pure joy to drive!  I must admit — it gave me the feeling of being in an airplane; this vehicle has enough controls on the steering wheel, drive dash, center console and in the back seat as well as the center armrest storage area front and rear. The interesting thing is it is totally doable.

Let’s look at the Aura MDX and see if it rings your bell.

To start with — I am happy to announce the Acura MDX is homemade!  Acura MDX Facility

This SUV is built in Lincoln, Alabama — giving jobs to 100’s of local workers.

Nice job Acura!

The Acura MDX has been around for a while and it gives the driver a great road feel, thanks to the very efficient 3.5-liter single overhead camshaft, 24-valve direct injected VTEC V6, producing 290 horsepower and having variable cylinder management (what that means is it will drop cylinders when you’re just cruising and don’t need the horsepower).

Backed by a very smooth 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sequential sport shift for the Ricky Racer in the family. The MDX will give you fuel mileage of 18 in the city, 27 on the freeway and a combined fuel mileage of 21 miles per gallon.

The Acura MDX has beautiful styling that is easy on the eyes and will give you the best fuel mileage possible. The interior is outstanding as well, starting with beautiful leather seating and having heated and cooling front seats that are a blessing, in fact the second row seats are heated and have the ability to recline.

And why would you want the second row seating to recline?

If you opt for the Ultra wide 16.2” DVD rear entertainment system with HDMI connection with wireless headphones — you'll want to recline!

When it comes to safety,  Acura did not skimp one bit, in fact,  the Acura MDX has enough safety features to calm down the most nervous driver; of course front airbags and systems like Collision Mitigation Braking System, Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-Lock Braking, Electronic Brake Distribution, Agile Handling Assist Dynamic Braking Systems, Tire Pressure Monitoring System and Child Latch System.

For more in depth understanding of the safety systems on the MDX, just speak with a salesman or check out the Acura safety specs on Acura.com.

All of those systems have good results: the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the 2014 Acura MDX a Top Safety Pick+.

Pricing: The 2014 Acura MDX bases out at $42,290 plus tax, license and shipping.

The warranty is outstanding, 6 year 70,000 mile power train warranty, 4 year 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, excluding wear items.

My test vehicle was $57,400 plus tax and license, but it would be worth every penny, with 7 passenger capabilities, flat rear floor for storage and a compartment under the floor.  So take one for a road test and it might just fit in your garage!
