21-year-old San Diego racer wins 2018 Formula 4 U.S. Championship

A local San Diego driver is now a racing champion. 21-year-old Dakota Dickerson won the 2018 Formula 4 US Championship last month.

Dakota Dickerson joined Lauren Phinney in studio to talk about his experience.

Dakota is 3rd generation racer with both his grandmother and father racing go-karts. He was raised in San Diego and started racing go-karts at the age of six.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

2017
• Started the season with Newman Wachs Racing, but went over to F4 U.S. Championship for the second half of the season and managed to finish 3rd in the Championship.

2016
• Won the Skip Barber Championship Shootout, earning a $200,000 Mazda scholarship for the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda
• Was a Team USA Scholarship winner claiming a top-five finish at the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, England
• Finished fourth overall in the Skip Barber Summer Series with five wins and nine podiums
• Was a multiple race winner in SCCA Spec (Mazda) Miata

2015
• Won the Skip Barber Championship Shootout, earning a $200,000 Mazda scholarship for the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda
• Team USA Scholarship winner claiming a top-five finish at the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, England
• Fourth overall in the Skip Barber Summer Series with five wins and nine podiums
• Multiple race winner in SCCA Spec (Mazda) Miata

2014
• Second place in the Skip Barber Karts to Cars Shootout
• Inaugural winner of Bryan Herta Career Advancement Scholarship
• Competed in two Skip Barber Winter Series race weekends with one win and four podiums.

2013
• Contested four races in the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas/Senior Rotax and two races in the SKUSA ProTour/TaG Senior.

2012
• Finished fifth overall in the SKUSA ProKart Challenge/TaG Senior.

2011
• Vice-champion – SKUSA PRO Tour Series
• Fourth overall (out of 35+ competitors) – Challenge of the Americas

2010
• DRIVER CHAMPION – Gatorz Rotax Challenge
• Seventh overall – Rotax Max Grand Nationals
• Fifth overall – Challenge of the Americas
