3/7/19 Boys Volleyball: San Marcos 3, Classical Academy 2

San Marcos versus Classical Academy was supposed to be one of the best early match ups in the county, and it didn’t disappoint.

It was a back & forth battle, went the distance with each set being closer than the last, but in the end, the Knights outlasted the defending CIFSDS Division III Champions, 3-2, on Thursday evening.

The Caimans took the first set, 25-22, with Team Captain, Ethan Champlin leading the way, The Senior Outside Hitter went on to finish with 14 kills on the day. San Marcos took the 2nd set, 25-18, but Classical Academy came right back in the 3rd set, winning 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead. Caimans Outside Hitter, Michael Pierce came up big, finishing with a team-high, 18 kills.

The two teams battled and grinded for the next two sets. The Knights won the 4th set, 27-25, to tie the match at 2 apiece, and then won the 5th and final set, 18-26, to take the victory.

Knights Setter, Kasey Clouet had a monster game, finishing with 37 assists, 9 kills, and 8 digs. Carston Wellong was big on offense and defense. He had 9 kills to go with his 7 blocks, while Max McCullough finished the night with 9 kills.

San Marcos goes to 3-1 on the season and will host Mission Vista on Monday.

Classical Academy starts the season off with a loss, but showed the same speed and skills that got them a CIF title last year. They travel to Escondido High School next Wednesday
