3/8/19 Baseball: La Costa Canyon 10, Vista 0
Justin Machado wins his 500th career game, Mavericks dominate over Vista
It was the ideal way to pick up career win #500 for La Costa Canyon’s Justin Machado. Your most recent star player sparks the offense and your starting pitcher plays lights out on the mound. If only there was one more angle to this story, like, maybe having your son in the starting lineup. Well, that was exactly the fairytale ending to the Mavericks’ 10-0 win over Vista on Friday afternoon.
Austin Machado was still 5 years away from arriving to this world when his father started coaching the Mavericks when the school opened 22 years ago. The junior at LCC, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. More importantly, he was behind the plate to catch an absolute gem from Ross Goldschlag, a 1-hit shutout that saw him punch out 11 Panthers over 7 innings.
Vanderbilt-bound, Spencer Jones gave the Mavs a 5-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, when he launched a fastball over the right-center field wall for a grand slam. The future Commodore would finish the day 2-for-3 with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.
RBI Singles by Nick Hays, Garrett Bevacqua and Jake Shenk got La Costa Canyon another 3 runs in the 4th inning.
Jones came up with the bases loaded again in the bottom of the 6th inning, but took a curveball right on the hip, bringing in the 10th and final run for the Mavs.
“This is the only place I’ve coached, it’s been such an incredible journey.” said Machado after the game.
La Costa Canyon goes to 6-1 on the season, and will travel to take on Rancho Bernardo on Tuesday.
The Panthers go to 3-4 and will play Canyon Crest Academy on Wednesday.
