4/10/19 Boys Lacrosse: Coronado 8, Poway 7
In an early preview of 2 teams that will be in this year’s CIFSDS Boys Lacrosse Open Division playoffs, Coronado outlasted Poway, 8-7, on Wednesday night.
Both the Islanders and Titans have their Senior Captains, Coronado’s George Farley & Poway’s Eli Butler, out with injuries, so they knew that the rest of the squad was going to have to step, and they didn’t disappoint. Butler, a Brown University commit, has missed the last 2 games, but says it is more precautionary than anything.
Islanders Junior, David Schulte, rising to the occasion, scoring 5 times for Coronado.
Titans Junior Captain, and Princeton University commit, Marquez White, led the way for Poway, scoring a hat-trick for Poway.
It was back-and-forth from the get-go. White put the Titans up 1-0 with a laser shot from the right side, but Coronado answered right back to tie it up when James Witthoft scored. When Roman Nalder hit the back of the net to put the Titans up 2-1, Schulte was right there to counter with a beautiful one-handed goal.
It was the same routine in the 2nd quarter. Schulte got 2 more goals for Coronado, while White and Junior Attackman, Colby Crawford scored 1 of his 2 goals on the night. Crawford’s goal tied it up at 4, ending the 1st half the same way the 1st quarter ended.
Daniel Bell scored the only goal in the 3rd quarter, giving the Islanders the 5-4 lead with just 12 minutes to play.
Poway tied it up at 5 when Zachary Allums got a really nice assist from Nalder, and got it past the goalie. Schulte scored 2 in a row to give Coronado the 2-goal advantage, before White got the Titans within 1 with a goal from 10 yards out.
With 4 minutes left in the game, Austin Contreras found Crawford open for the equalizer, but with 30 seconds left on the clock, Casey Harris found Miguel Serrano camping out in front of the goal, he snuck it by the Poway goalie to send the Islanders home with the win.
The Titans go to 6-7 on teh season with Scripps Ranch on deck. Coronado now has a 8-3 record. They host Patrick Henry on Friday.
