4/18/19 Baseball: Classical Academy 9, San Dieguito Academy 2

The Lions Baseball Tournament Division 4A Championship Game turned into the battle of Academies when Classical Academy and San Dieguito Academy both advanced to the title game on Thursday afternoon. The Caimans took home the hardware, beating the Mustangs, 9-2, behind the hitting of Zack Jordan and an outstanding performance on the mound by Vince Marcantonio.

The Caimans beat Mt. Carmel in the semifinals to the reach the championship game, while the Mustangs defeated Chula Vista.

Jordan won the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, leading Classical Academy to a 5-0 record in the tournament. It was the 69th consecutive year for the Lions Tournament, the longest running baseball tournament in the country.

The Caimans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 2nd inning and never looked back. Michael Moody drove in Binyam Gebhardt with an RBI Single and Noah Dull followed that up with an RBI Single of his own, bringing in Moody from 3rd base.

That brought up Jordan with the bases loaded. He went opposite-field, sneaking just inside the right-field foul-line for the 3-RBI triple. James Sarandis, Dane Kelsey and Dull all came around to score to extend the Caimans lead, and presumably seal the deal.

The Mustangs got one back in the 4th and in the 5th, loaded the bases for Sean Alvarez with 2 outs. Alvarez singled to right field to score a run, but Tim Boshaw came up throwing and gunned down the runner at home plate to prevent a second run from scoring.

The Caimans are riding quite a momentum right now. They won the North County Tournament a couple weeks, won their game at Petco Park last week, and now add a Lions Tournament Championship to their season. They are now 18-3 with a 3-0 record in league play.
