4/19/19 Boys Lacrosse: Sage Creek 9, Rancho Buena Vista 6
The Sage Creek / Rancho Buena Vista boys lacrosse game started out slow, but ended with a lot of drama. When time had expired on the game clock, the Bobcats had escaped with 9-6 victory over their Valley League rival Longhorns.
If you are questioning my use of the word ‘escape’ in a 9-6 victory, you have every right to. A 3-goal margin is a wide margin in most lacrosse games. But this wasn’t like most lacrosse games. Let me explain.
Sage Creek and RBV have only had a lacrosse team for 2 years. Their young, but very hungry. Both teams go out every game day to try to prove to their opponents, their fans, and most importantly, themselves, that they are here to compete. That hunger was on full display on Friday night at Longhorn Stadium.
It was all Bobcats in the 1st half. Freshman Attackman, Cayden Gutches got Sage Creek on the board first, he went on to score a hat-trick for the Bobcats. Jackson Loeffler added and a goal to make it 2-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. A pair of goals by Carson Olander in the 2nd quarter made it 4-0, he also finished with a hat-trick.
Kale Clark made it 5-0 witha goal in the 3rd quarter, but the Longhorns finally got on the board, responding with goals from step-brothers, Nick Nilsson and Chaz Ferris.
Here is where the drama comes in. The 4th quarter. Ferris scored to get the Longhorns within 2 goals, but Sage Creek countered with Gutches’ 2nd goal of the night, Olander’s 3rd of the night and a score from Zach Schubert. Lead, back up to 8-3.
RBV’s Connor Flanagan cut it to 8-4 and then back-to-back to make it 8-5. Cameron Tyler, again, got Rancho Buena Vista within 2 goals with just over 2 minutes left in the game, but Gutches would not go away. The Freshman Attack scored his 3rd, sealing the deal for the Bobcats.
