40th anniversary rally held at Friendship Park

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The 40th anniversary of Friendship Park was celebrated Saturday.

The park near the Mexico border was dedicated in 1971 by then-first lady Pat Nixon and has since become a rallying site for immigration activists.

The celebration is scheduled to include music and distinguished speakers on both sides of the border. The celebration coincides with the announcement of a major shift in immigration policy. In some cases, illegal immigrants arrested for misdemeanors will get a chance to apply for a work permit, rather than being deported.

The event will also include an appearance by Henry Sanchez Pardo, a history professor who is running from Argentina to Alaska, and planting trees along the way.
