8 hospitalized after fireworks were launched into crowd at Lunar New Year celebration

ORANGE COUNTY (KUSI) – One Lunar New Year celebration took a turn for the worst when fireworks were launched into the crowd.

This was just this morning right after midnight during a celebration in Garden Grove.

At least a dozen people were injured from either the blast or the shrapnel.

Eight of the victims were taken to the hospital, two suffering traumatic injuries.

“The fireworks that were being used here were professional style, not the ones you would buy at your usual store,” says Orange County Fire Captain Jeff Sutherlin.  He adds that they’re still looking into the cause as they address and treat injuries caused by the explosion.
