80-year-old Encinitas man goes missing for 1 month, turns up as Oceanside hospital patient under alternate name

OCEANSIDE (KUSI) – An 80-year-old man from Encinitas that was reported missing over one month ago was identified as a patient admitted to an Oceanside hospital in mid-February, sheriff’s officials said. Detectives investigating the disappearance of Gerard Kelly visited his home on several occasions and always saw his car parked in his garage upon arrival.

After failing to locate him, officials contacted local hospitals hoping to find the missing elderly man.

An employee at Tri-City Medical Center told detectives a patient was checked in that matched the description provided, but was checked in under a different name, authorities said. Kelly checked into the hospital seeking treatment for an undisclosed medical condition. Officials did not immediately reveal why the man was using another name at the hospital.
