85 year old DUI suspect crashes into Oceanside home

OCEANSIDE (KUSI) — An 85-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence crashed into a home in Oceanside Sunday, luckily causing no injury to himself or the residents but causing the evacuation of many homes in the area, authorities said.

The man lost control of the Toyota sedan around 7 p.m. Sunday night in the 2600 block of Vista Campana and crashed into the wall of the home, Ryan Keim of the Oceanside Police Department said.

The residents were inside the home at the time of the crash but were not injured, Keim said.

“The structure sustained major damage which included a ruptured gas line,” Keim said. The rupture forced the evacuation of several nearby residences. Damages were assessed by building inspectors and repairs were expected to take several hours.

The police investigation revealed alcohol was a factor in the crash and the driver was issued a DUI citation.

The driver was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, Keim said. He did not appear to be injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. His name was not immediately available.
