After five weeks of fighting, Legion ready for playoff scrum

Despite splitting time between Cathedral Catholic High School and Cal Berkeley, Drew Gaffney is always learning.
“I found out a Legion is a [military] group of around 6,000 people,” the former Don said.
His San Diego Legion rugby squad had to lose some of their legion on the way to the MLR semifinals against Seattle.
On May 25, the Legion were embarrassed in Austin. The 26 point drubbing left the side 2-3 and on the playoff ropes.
But that wasn’t the worst news of the week.
National callups had come, and the rugby team would lose a chunk of their talented team for the final three games of the season.
Legion hooker Gil Covey then found inspiration from another championship team that love and lost before hoisting a trophy.
“We needed to be like the Philadelphia Eagles,” Covey said.
The moniker seems to be working.
With big wins against New Orleans, Austin and Glendale, the Legion are right where they need to be. And if a semifinal win happens, they’ll be right where they want to be. The MLR finals are at USD, their home pitch.
