SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Federal agents at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry caught a Nevada man trying to sneak nearly 50 pounds of heroin into the United States in his car.

The 57-year-old Las Vegas resident drove into the inspection station in a 2007 Chrysler Sebring about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

A service dog detected contraband in the vehicle and officers found 32 packages of heroin stacked in the rocker panels.

The haul cost an estimated $580,000.

The driver, whose name was not released, was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego to await prosecution.

Customs agents seized the vehicle along with the heroin.
