Airport Authority joins lawsuit against Port of San Diego, Port Chairman reacts
Port of San Diego Chairman Rafael Castellanos joined Good Morning San Diego to give his thoughts on the Airport Authority joining the lawsuit against the Port of San Diego.
The Port has resumed collection of a modest rental car fee for a project that will be the epicenter of South County’s regional economy – the Chula Vista Bayfront.
The fee is a funding mechanism that has been used in the past to fund a parking facility serving the San Diego Convention Center. Its current collection will help fund the construction of a parking facility that will primarily serve the proposed Chula Vista Bayfront convention center and resort hotel, and surrounding visitor-serving amenities.
The Board of Port Commissioners adopted a resolution in support of resuming the fee at its meeting on April 10, 2018.
On June 8, 2018, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Hertz filed a lawsuit against the Port claiming the fee is invalid and is a tax that requires voter approval. Enterprise and Hertz are seeking the Court to declare the fee invalid. . In July 2018, the Port learned that the Airport Authority intends to join the lawsuit.
