Officials gave the all-clear two hours later. There were no reports of arrests or injuries.
An investigation was underway to determine what caused the alert, Redstone Arsenal spokesman Christopher Colster said.
The military installation was scheduled to undergo an training exercise this week, but an email sent to employees said the incident was not related and should be treated as a “real world event,” according to CNN.
The military arsenal has more than 30,000 civilian and military employees which oversees Army missile defense programs. It also houses NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
