Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: United States is ‘running concentration camps on our southern border’

Conservative leaders are slamming Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over her statement on migrant detention centers at the U.S. Mexico border.

On Instagram live, Ocasio-Cortez said, “The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are – they are concentration camps.” She continued saying, “I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that we should not, that ‘never again’ means something.”

But some conservatives blasted that statement. Representative Liz Cheney, the number three House Republican says Ocasio-Cortez demeaned Holocaust victims by comparing the detention centers with concentration camps.

But, AOC is defending her statement saying the term “concentration camp” refers to any mass detention center where civilians are held without trial.

Other Democrats have also taken to Twitter to defend her statements.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy didn’t take Ocasio-Cortez’s words lightly. He said, “AOC needs to apologize, not only to the nation but to the world. She does not undertand history. She does not understand what’s going on at the border at the same time. But there is no comparison and to actually say that is really embarrassing.” He continued, “To take something that happened in history where millions of Jews have died and equate it to somewhere that’s happening on the border, she owes this nation an apology.”

Furthermore, the official accounts for Yad Vashem, the World Center for Holocaust research, and the Auschwitz Memorial voiced their opposition to AOC’s statement with tweets of their own.

The Auschwitz Memorial also tweeted back at MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes for his defense of Ocasio-Cortez’s comments.

Both these tweets were very unusual. Neither account makes political statements, rather serve as a place to learn about the history of the sites.
