Alley shootout in City Heights neighborhood

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Gunfire rang out in a City Heights neighborhood Friday, putting two nearby primary schools into lockdown for about an hour but causing no reported injuries.

San Diego police got a rash of 911 calls about the gunshots around the intersection of Altadena and Orange Avenues shortly after 1:30 p.m., SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said.

Several of the callers reported seeing members of two groups of men, possibly gang members, opening fire in an alley, then running off in various directions.

Administrators at Euclid and Ybarra elementary schools directed teachers to keep their pupils locked in their classrooms while police searched the area for the assailants and any victims.

At least one person had been detained by 2:30 p.m., but it was unclear if that person was one of the shooters, according to Brown.
